Musical: West Side Story

Hey! Maybe its a little out of place but I'm starting this new -section- of the blog where I basically ramble about musicals. I think this can be interesting and bring a little variety. The first one, as you can guess by the title is West Side Story.

What is West Side Story?

West Side Story is a 1957 musical, inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in Upper West Side New York in the mid 50s, Romeo (Tony) is a white american, Juliet (Maria) a puerto rican inmigrant and instead of houses they have gangs the Jets and the Sharks. It was adapted to film in 1961.

The book was written by Arthur Laurents, the music by Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It has been five times on Broadway and adapted into a lot of languages. I had the pleasure to see a spanish production in the Calderón theatre in Madrid, it was wonderful.

Here is a little video of the cast:

Why do I like it?

I think it has a great message about racism xenophobia and even if it has some scenes that are kind of hard for me to watch -Jets harrasing Anita- it does its job at delivering the message. But the music and choreography its just mind blowing% The music is just so good and catchy, can be funny and dramatic but it remains beautiful. The choreography is incredible, all the actors that play their parts are so multitalented, one of my favorite moments of the show its the gym dance.

To finish

West Side Story is really good and you should watch it. Of course not everyone can afford going to the theatre and seeing it live but the movie is always there!
